Phase 1 of the Huddersfield town centre regeneration project concentrates on the major refurbishment of the historic (Grade II listed) former Queensgate Market building, which is transformed into a vibrant new food hall and new library, with a new glass-fronted extension to the north that blends into and compliments the existing heritage structure.
Both the food hall and library directly feed out onto a new public square, with the connecting space perfectly suited to outdoor cultural events and gatherings.
Alt Fire were appointed to provide input into the fire safety design during the design stages (RIBA Stage 3 – 4) and through the Construction Design Stages (RIBA Stage 4 – 7). We also undertook a bespoke risk assessment for the West Yorkshire Archive Services to review the protection of their archive rooms within the building.
Fire Safety Design for heritage projects require unique expertise and considerations. We understand the delicate balance between preserving history and ensuring safety. Some of our considerations including:
- Unique challenges when integrating modern fire safety measures, such as alarms, sprinklers, or fire-resistant materials without compromising the building fabric or aesthetics
- Limited alterations to original features requiring creative solutions for fire compartmentation and safe evacuation routes. Listed building are not designed with modern fire safety in mind and demand an innovative approach.
- Bespoke solutions. Every listed building is unique, a fire safety solution must be tailored to the building’s specific layout, materials and usage.
- Collaboration with specialists and navigating regulatory approval. Close collaboration with the architect, conservation experts and contractors to ensure a multidisciplinary approach ensuring fire safety measures align with both regulatory requirements and heritage preservation goals.
